Arsenal legend joins Arteta in heaping praise on debutant Takehiro Tomiyasu

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright has provided his take on the impressive debut showing of Gunners summer addition Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Auba makes the difference

Mikel Arteta’s men returned to action on Saturday afternoon.

In the club’s first outing on the back of the international break, the Gunners welcomed Norwich City to the Emirates, for a bottom-of-the-table clash.

Arsenal headed into proceedings aware that nothing but three points would suffice, after slipping to a trio of defeats in their first three outings of the campaign.

And, when all was said and done in North London, get the club’s first win of the season on the board is precisely what the hosts, just, managed.

A hard-fought affair, during which it looked at times as though Arsenal would never manage an opener, eventually saw the game’s telling moment arrive 20 minutes into the 2nd-half.

After a remarkable sequence of events saw Nicolas Pepe hit not one, but both posts, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was on hand to slot home Arsenal’s first Premier League goal of the campaign, sealing victory in the process:

On the back of the action coming to a close in the capital, though, it was in fact not the name of match-winner Aubameyang which was on the lips of many an Arsenal fan.

Instead, this came in the form of summer addition Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Japanese international Tomiyasu of course sealed a deadline day switch to the Emirates early last week, before being thrown in from the off by Mikel Arteta versus Norwich, in a right-back role.

And the ex-Bologna man went on to fully repay the faith of his new boss, thoroughly impressing across a 62-minute debut:

The Gunners faithful, in turn, quickly went on to lavish praise on the latest addition to the club’s squad.

And, as outlined above, such commendation has since been echoed by one of the greatest players in the storied history of the North Londoners.

When drawn on Tomiyasu’s first outing in Arsenal colours during an appearance on Match of the Day, club legend Ian Wright simply explained:

‘I thought he had a fantastic debut.’

This comes after Mikel Arteta was too keen to single out his new stopper for praise on Saturday evening, with the Spaniard having been particularly impressed with Tomiyasu’s understanding of his role:

‘[It was] really positive. Just the first impression when you met him, it was just joy and happiness and good energy.’

‘The moment he steps on the pitch he was really focused, determined, he understands the role really good.’
