Veretout shines in Italy
English football fans may remember Jordan Veretout from his short spell at Aston Villa.
The midfielder signed for Villa in 2015 from Ligue 1 outfit FC Nantes.
Veretout would make 25 Premier League appearance for Aston Villa in the 2015/16 season that saw them finish 20th and relegated to the Championship.
After being relegated from the PL, Villa would loan out Veretout to Saint-Etienne for the 2016/17 campaign.
The 26-year-old was then sold to current club Fiorentina in July of 2017, for a fee of around £6.3 million.
Veretout has since made 75 appearances across all competitions for the Serie A outfit.
The Frenchman played 43 games this past season, scoring four and assisting five.
After a solid 2018/19, Veretout looks to be attracting the attention of some top clubs in Europe.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, Arsenal have enquired about signing Veretout, although they look to be facing some stiff competition.
Also mentioned in the report from L’Equipe are AS Roma, Sevilla and Napoli, with the latter said to be in pole position.
Given the fact that Arsenal have just lost Aaron Ramsey for free to Juventus, Veretout could be being targeted as his replacement.
Like Ramsey, he is a central midfielder, though he has a slightly more defensive style than the Welshman.
Also, given that Veretout has never moved for more than £9 million, he will likely be available for a reasonable price in today’s transfer market.
This would suit Arsenal, given that they are expected to have a transfer budget of just £40 million this summer due to missing out on Champions League football.
