The Daily Star is today reporting that Arsenal have held positive talks with Sevilla midfielder Ever Banega’s agent.
Arsenal boss Unai Emery worked with Banega during his time managing Sevilla and is now looking to bring him to London, likely as a replacement for Jack Wilshere.
Jack Wilshere’s current Arsenal contract expires on the 1st of July and after unsuccessful talks with new Arsenal boss Unai Emery, Wilshere is set to leave the Gunners this summer, which he announced via Instagram.
“Following a number of extensive conversations with those at the club, and in particular a recent meeting with the new manager Unai Emery, I felt that I was ultimately left with little choice but to make the decision that I have due to purely footballing reasons.
“I am sure everyone can understand that, at this point in my life and career, I need to be playing regular first-team football and following my meeting with Mr Emery I came away with the feeling that it would be very difficult for me to do so at Arsenal.
“Given this, I feel I have no option but to pursue other opportunities in order to progress my career on the pitch.”
As a result, Wilshere could be set to join a team such as West Ham in the coming weeks on a free, meaning Arsenal will need a centre mid replacement, which they appear to have identified in Banega.
Banega is 29 years of age and has enjoyed a successful career around Europe.
The Argentinean has enjoyed spells at Atletico Madrid, Valencia, Sevilla and Inter Milan.
It was Sevilla and Argentina that Banega impressed for most though.
In 185 games for Valencia Banega scored 11 and assisted 30. He has also played 144 games over two spells for current club Sevilla, in which he has scored 17 and assisted 15 but he now looks to be on the move this summer with Arsenal very keen on him.
