Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC: Score prediction & betting tips

Arsenal welcome Liverpool to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday for the first time since November 2018.

Due to the way Premier League fixtures and cup draws have been arranged, the last three matches between the two sides have all taken place at Anfield. The Reds coming out victorious in each of the three occasions.

In fact, the Gunners have failed to win any of the last ten matches in this head-to-head. Their last victory was with Arsene Wenger still in charge, winning 4-1 against Brendan Rodger’s Liverpool.

Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC: What are the betting odds?

Arsenal are yet to defeat Liverpool during the Jurgen Klopp era. They come into the match in good home form though, having won four of their last five matches at the Emirates. This sees them start the day on odds of 23/10 to make it five out of six.

Three of the last four matches between these teams at the Emirates have ended in a stalemate. Historically, this has been the most common outcome here, with twenty-six draws from sixty-five matches. This makes the odds of 11/4 for a draw look very good value.

Liverpool are chasing just their third away win against Arsenal since the turn of the millennium. They have also struggled on their travels as of late, winning just one of their last six matches in all competitions. Despite this, they start the match as favourites at evens.

Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC: Most likely goalscorers?

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is Arsenal’s top scorer this season with twenty Premier League goals. However, he is yet to find the net against Liverpool since joining Arsenal in January 2018. Auba’s only goal in seven appearances against Liverpool came for Dortmund in the 4-3 defeat at Anfield in the Europa League in 2016. The Gabon international is the favourite to grab a goal for the Gunners against Liverpool.

With two goals against Brighton a week ago, Mohamed Salah is closing ground in the race to win his 3rd consecutive Golden Boot Award. At the time of writing, the Liverpool top-scorer’s nineteen goals leaves Salah trailing Jamie Vardy by three. The Egyptian King is the favourite of the visitors to get on the scoresheet.

Only Robbie Fowler has more goals in the Premier League era against Arsenal than Roberto Firmino. The Brazilian International regularly terrorises the Gunners in this fixture and has eight goals and three assists in nine appearances. However, only one of his goals have come here at the Emirates.

Arsenal FC vs Liverpool FC: Match preview

Both sides come into this match on the back of a disappointing result at the weekend.

Arsenal threw away the North London Derby having taken a 16th minute lead. While they dominated possession of the ball, they never really broke the typically defensive Mourinho side down.

All four of the big chances in the game fell to Spurs, through a mixture of good use of counter attacks and silly individual errors. It was only the heroics of Emiliano Martínez, who has been outstanding since coming in for the injured Bernd Leno, that kept the score-line down to 2-1.

It was a similar story for Liverpool at the weekend. They also dominated possession throughout the game against Burnley, but squandered numerous good chances with poor finishing. The handful of times their finishing deserved a goal, Nick Pope was on hand to save the day for Burnley. The English stopper was awarded man of the match having stopped eight of nine shots on target.

With the Reds leading 1-0 despite battering on Burnley for seventy minutes, a rare attack for the Clarets saw the ball break kindly for them to score the equaliser.

Champions League qualification already looks an impossibility for Arsenal. Actually, chances of qualifying for European football at all are fading fast. Wolves, Sheffield United, Spurs and even Burnley all look well placed to keep them out of the Europa League qualification spots.

For Liverpool, with the title already sewn up, their objectives here are to keep their momentum going to carry it into their title defence next season. They could also still finish the season with a record points total of one-hundred and two. To do so, they must win at the Emirates.

Arsenal FC team news vs Liverpool FC

Calum Chambers was ruled for up to a year back in December. He ruptured his ACL against Chelsea and has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

Gabriel Martinelli has been ruled out for the rest of the season. He suffered injury to his left knee and has already undergone a successful arthroscopic procedure to repair a lesion in the cartilage.

Pablo Mari has also been ruled out for the rest of the season. He suffered a significant sprain to his left ankle against Manchester City and isn’t expected to return until September.

Bernd Leno is also unlikely to feature for the Gunners again this season. Although, his injury isn’t as serious as first feared following his awkward landing against Brighton. He should be expected back before for first game of the 2020/21 season.

Matteo Guendouzi is another player unlikely to feature for Arsenal this season. While he is available for selection, he has been shunned for selection by Arteta since his clash with Neil Maupay of Brighton.

After an unsuccessful appeal, Eddie Nketiah is suspended for three matches for his red card against Leicester. He will be available for selection again for Arsenal’s following league match against Aston Villa.

Mesut Ozil has been struggling with a lower back problem. Should he feature on Wednesday evening, it is likely to only be from the bench.

Liverpool FC team news vs Arsenal FC

Nathaniel Clyne left the club at the end of June after the expiry of his contract. He had not featured for Liverpool this season due to an ACL injury picked up in pre-season.

Joel Matip has confirmed that he is unlikely to make it back onto this pitch for Liverpool this season due to an ankle injury sustained in the Merseyside Derby.

Jordan Henderson confirmed on twitter this week that the knee injury picked up against Brighton will see him play no further part this season. Curtis Jones was drafted in to replace him against Burnley, giving a good account of himself in his first league start.

Xherdan Shaqiri returned to the bench as an unused substitute against Burnley at the weekend. He hasn’t for Liverpool since a 1-minute cameo at the end of their 0-1 win at Spurs back in January. Shaq will be hoping for some minutes before the end of the season to prove to Klopp he has something to offer before the transfer window opens.

Dejan Lovren picked up a knock in training keeping him out of the squads against Man City and Aston Villa last week. He made his way back to the bench against Burnley at the weekend. Could the poor form of Gomez see him get a shock recall to the side?

James Milner was left out of recent squads to face Villa and Burnley. Klopp confirmed he is struggling with a minor thigh problem and it doesn’t make sense to risk him.
