Arsenal fans single out one player for abuse following Southampton win

Supporters of Arsenal have this evening taken to social media in their numbers to take aim at Jack Wilshere, following his performance during the club’s clash with Southampton.

Matchup

The Gunners welcomed Mark Hughes’ relegation candidates to the Emirates for today’s early Premier League kick-off, with the capital outfit fresh off a morale-boosting 4-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Arsene Wenger’s men sat 6th in the English top-flight table ahead of kick-off, just two points clear of Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Southampton, meanwhile, occupied the final Premier League relegation place heading into this afternoon’s action, sitting 3 points adrift of Crystal Palace in 17th.

Thriller

A thoroughly exciting affair was subsequently played out between the two sides in North London, with Shane Long having opened the game’s scoring following some questionable Arsenal defending in the 17th-minute.

However, the hosts were soon back on terms, as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang continued his recent hot streak in front of goal to finish off a flowing Gunners’ move.

Danny Welbeck then turned the fixture on its head in the 38th-minute, after his penetrating run into the heart of the Southampton defence eventually saw his strike deflect past the helpless Alex Mccarthy in the Saints’ goal.

But Mark Hughes’ men were not ready to throw in the towel, and pulled level in the 73rd-minute, through Charlie Austin.

In the end, though, Arsenal’s class proved just too much for the visitors, as Man of the Match Danny Welbeck grabbed his second of the day with ten minutes to go.

A late scuffle in injury-time saw both sides reduced to ten men, with Jack Stephens and Mohamed Elneny given their marching orders.

Slated

While Arsenal may have come away with the 3 points on the day, there were a couple of sub-standard performances on the part of Arsene Wenger’s men this afternoon, with one player, as showcased below, having come in for particularly heavy criticism from the Gunners’ faithful:
