Arsenal fans fume as VAR dismisses ‘obvious’ handball by Burnley’s Erik Pieters

Burnley vs Arsenal

Saturday’s early Premier League kick-off played out a short time ago.

The tie saw Burnley welcome Arsenal to Turf Moor.

The Clarets have a pretty dismal record against the ‘big six’, but nevertheless beat the Gunners at the Emirates earlier this season.

It was Arsenal who opened the scoring on Saturday, though.

Some excellent work by Thomas Partey led to the African playing in Willian, who went on to slip in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to cut in from his favoured left side and beat Nick Pope at his near post:

In typical Arsenal fashion, though, Mikel Arteta’s side were unable to capitalise on their early dominance, and were eventually punished.

An absolutely comical error from Granit Xhaka handed Sean Dyche’s side an equaliser shortly before the break, when the Swiss international smashed the ball off Chris Wood, with the deflection having beaten Bernd Leno:

Arsenal fans unhappy with VAR

Following Burnley’s equaliser, Arsenal were unable to retake a real hold of the game, forcing Mikel Arteta’s side, in the end, to settle for a point.

However, the north Londoners did see a fairly obvious penalty shout waved away by both the referee, and then VAR.

Nicolas Pepe made his way into the Burnley box, where he eventually kicked the ball in the direction of Clarets defender Erik Pieters.

And, as shown below, Pieters clearly had his arm stretched out, with Pepe’s pass blocked by the hand of the stopper:

Andre Marriner did not blow for a penalty at the time, but Arsenal’s fans were no doubt expecting a VAR review to award their side a spot-kick.

However, the check didn’t appear to last any more than 30 seconds, as play was waved on.

This has since understandably caused quite a stir on social media, with the Gunners faithful less than impressed:
