Arsenal fans fume after another Europa League embarrassment

Another night in Europe to forget

Arsenal fans are not happy in the slightest on Thursday evening after they suffered another Europa League embarrassment at the hands of Rennes.

It was only a couple of Europa League games ago that the Gunners were left red-faced following a defeat to BATE Borisov.

Arsenal fans were extremely frustrated then, so much so that questions were asked about Unai Emery’s future at the club.

While that has died down somewhat in recent weeks, the same questions could be asked this week after another embarrassing loss in Europe to Rennes.

Poor performance in France

It looked as though it was going to be a pretty simple night for Arsenal when they went ahead just two minutes into the game.

Alex Iwobi’s cross crept in at the far post to give Arsenal an early 1-0 lead.

It would remain 1-0 until the 41st minute when it would all go very pear-shaped for Arsenal.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos was booked for a silly challenge in the 34th minute but received a second yellow in the 41st minute, resulting in Arsenal going down to 10 men.

While some defended Sokratis, others criticised the Greek defender who has been pretty good for the Gunners in recent weeks.

Rennes go through the gears

Almost seconds after Sokratis was sent off, Rennes would find themselves level.

Despite blasting the resulting free-kick into the wall, Benjamin Bourigeaud would smash the rebound into the roof.

Arsenal just needed to hang on, try and stay solid and get through this game without giving themselves an uphill task at the Emirates.

However, they couldn’t manage that as an own goal from Nacho Monreal saw them fall 2-1 behind.

Then, just when it looked as though Arsenal would escape with a one-goal deficit, Rennes scored again.

This time it was Ismaïla Sarr, heading past Petr Cech.

Safe to say, that kind of performance simply isn’t good enough for Arsenal, especially after the BATE defeat in the last round.

Now, Arsenal fans have slammed their side on social media.
