Arsenal want Calero in January
Arsenal are interested in signing Real Valladolid centre-back Fernando Calero in the January transfer window, according to the Sun.
Calero is 23 years of age and has played 46 games for Real Valladolid’s first team, scoring one in that time.
The Spaniard was also a key member of Real Valladolid’s squad that won promotion to the Spanish first division in the 2017/18 season.
Calero has also played all 15 of Real Valladolid’s games in La Liga this season.
Real Valladolid are currently 12th in La Liga and have conceded just 15 goals in 15 games, a solid record for a newly-promoted team with Calero playing a big role in their defensive stability.
Rob Holding replacement
The reason Arsenal are said to be targeting a January move for Calero is due to the injury Rob Holding suffered.
Holding ruptured his ACL earlier this month and has had to undergo surgery.
Arsenal gave this update on Holding’s recovery time:
“He will undergo surgery to repair this in the coming days. The rehabilitation process is expected to take between six to nine months.”

As a result, Holding looks set to miss the remainder of the 2018/19 season. This means Arsenal are very short staffed in the centre-back department.
Arsenal cannot even call upon Calum Chambers to fill the hole Holding has left as he is unable to be recalled from his loan at Fulham.
