Arsenal have expressed an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund centre-back Sokratis Papastathopoulos, according to Italian source Gazzetta dello Sport.
It is understood that manager Arsene Wenger is keeping a close eye on the Greek defender with the Frenchman keen on bringing him to the Emirates in the summer.
However, the Gunners are set to be rivalled for the player’s signature by Juventus, with the Italian giants also very keen on signing Sokratis.
Wenger keen on Sokratis
Wenger is a big fan of the 29-year-old, with his experience at the top level something that is attracting him to the player, according to the report.
Arsenal are now keeping a close eye on the central-defender ahead of a potential move in the summer.
Arsenal have endured yet another tough Premier League campaign with one of their biggest criticism being their frailty in defence.
With their top centre-backs Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi failing to perform, Per Mertesacker set to soon retire and both Calum Chambers and Rob Holding showing signs of inexperience, it is clear a new central-defender is required at Arsenal.
Sokratis would provide a fantastic option at the Emirates, with the player having had plenty of experience playing at the very highest level and a defender who has also proven himself at the very highest level.
The Greek international has become a key figure in Dortmund’s back-line and accumulated a total of 59 European appearances throughout his career showing the 29-year-old would be an astute signing.
