Arsenal duo and Chelsea loanee snubbed in latest Three Lions squad for November fixtures

Gareth Southgate England

England take on Albania and San Marino

Gareth Southgate and England will take on Albania and San Marino in the upcoming international break, in the final two fixtures of World Cup 2022 qualifying.

The Three Lions head into the ties knowing that they need to take four points from a possible six in order to ensure that they win their group, with Poland waiting should the English slip up.

This comes after Southgate’s side dropped points against Poland and also at home to Hungary, who held the Euro 2020 finalists to a 1-1 draw in a game marred by crowd trouble.

In San Marino, they will take on a side that has not picked up a point thus far, and only scored one goal in their qualification campaign, which in itself is a success given that they sit among the lowest-ranked UEFA sides.

Albania may be a tougher prospect, but Southgate and co. will surely be confident of qualifying following the conclusion of the international break.

Eyes on Emile

One man who was almost certainly deserving of an England call-up is Arsenal’s Emile Smith Rowe, who has been in brilliant form for the Gunners since the last international break.

Gareth Southgate revealed that Smith Rowe was close to a call up last time round, and since then he has provided 2 goals and 1 assist in three Premier League games.

Therefore, it was somewhat surprising to see that Smith Rowe was not amongst those selected by Southgate for the upcoming round of games. Nor was there space for the impressive Conor Gallagher, though the out of form Harry Maguire and Raheem Sterling kept their places.

Clearly, Southgate values the experience that the pair bring, for two games in which he must get results. For those keen to see youth blossom, however, it is a bitter pill to swallow.
