Arsenal dealt Lichtsteiner injury blow vs Southampton

Arsenal 2-Southampton 0

Arsenal hosted Southampton on Sunday as they looked to move back into a Champions League spot.

The Gunners began the weekend in 5th place, one point behind Manchester United.

United were playing Liverpool on Sunday in what would no doubt prove to be a tough test.

So, Arsenal knew a win would likely take them back into a UCL spot.

Southampton, on the other hand, started the weekend in the relegation zone, one point behind Cardiff.

The Saints had lost just one of their last five league games before Arsenal, although, they were without a win in three.

Lichtsteiner limps off

The game got off to an excellent start for Arsenal as Alexander Lacazette put them 1-0 up inside six minutes.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan then doubled Arsenal’s lead in the 17th minute.

Despite picking up all three points on Sunday, Arsenal were dealt some bad news.

Stephen Lichtsteiner would be subbed off in the 56th minute vs Southampton with a knock.

Arsenal are already without their main right-back Hector Bellerin for the remainder of the season so, losing Lichtsteiner for any period of time would be a huge blow.

Arsenal’s next game sees them host Bournemouth on Wednesday.
