Arsenal confirm David Luiz red card to stand, Southampton successful with Bedranek appeal

Mixed results in red card appeals with Arsenal unsuccessful

Arsenal have released a club statement confirming that the FA has upheld the red card handed to David Luiz during their midweek loss to Wolves.

The statement let it be known that the Gunners are frustrated with the outcome.

We have worked really hard to overturn David Luiz’s red card. We presented our case to the FA but are disappointed that our appeal has been unsuccessful”

Arsenal were in total control of Tuesday’s game when David Luiz was adjudged to have made contact with Willian Jose, but there was controversy surrounding the decision, as TV replays were inconclusive. If there was contact, it seemed accidental.

The Brazilian will now miss Saturday’s trip to Aston Villa. As he was sent off for stopping a goal scoring opportunity, he will only serve a one-match ban.

Southampton have received better news, as they have been successful in their appeal of Jan Bednarek’s red card received against Manchester United. The stopper was adamant that Anthony Martial told him there was no foul committed, with Bednarek having been heard exclaiming as much as he left the field.

Bednarek will now be available for Southampton’s next game against Newcastle.
