Arsenal getting desperate at full-back
Arsenal are reportedly closing in on the signing of Southampton defender Cedric Soares, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
The Gunners have been blighted by injury problems during the current campaign, specifically at full-back.
Summer signing Kieran Tierney has suffered several injury problems since joining Arsenal, while Hector Bellerin has only recently returned from injury.
Calum Chambers has also suffered an ACL injury this season, while Shkodran Mustafi looks set for a spell on the sidelines after his injury during the clash with Bournemouth.
Now, Arsenal are reportedly closing in on some defensive reinforcements in the transfer market.
However, don’t expect this one to excite the Gunners’ fans.
Cedric Soares to the Emirates?
According to Sky Sports, Arsenal are ‘closing in’ on a move for Southampton’s Cedric Soares.
The Portuguese defender’s contract is set to expire in the summer, and Sky claim that there are no talks planned over a new deal.
That means Soares would likely be available for a nominal fee in this window.
Sky’s report claims ‘Arsenal are keen to strengthen their defensive capabilities, having kept just four clean sheets in the Premier League this campaign.’
Though, the signing of Cedric may not fill Arsenal fans with excitement.
Since coming to the Premier League, Cedric has conceded 148 goals in 120 appearances, albeit in a frail defence.
He will likely feature as back-up to Hector Bellerin, regardless.
Arsenal confirm the signing of Pablo Marí
One player who will excite fans, though, is Pablo Marí.
Arsenal have long been weak in central defence, and the signing of Mari could improve their options in that position.
The 26-year-old was confirmed as an Arsenal player on their social media pages on Wednesday.
The Spaniard has signed on an initial six-month loan, with an option to buy in the summer.
Mari was a crucial part of Flamengo’s Copa Libertadores and league title-winning season, despite only signing for the Brazilian club in July.
Now, Mikel Arteta will be hoping that the Spaniard can help Arsenal’s leaky defence.
