Per Mertesacker before the FA Cup final

Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker “confident” that Alexis Sanchez will remain at the club

Decision made

Arsenal’s summer will be classed as a success or failure depending on the outcome of Alexis Sanchez’s future.

The Chilean has just 12 months left on his deal at the Emirates, and without Champions League football to offer him, the Gunners may find it difficult to stop him from joining Manchester City or Bayern Munich.

Over the weekend, Sanchez admitted to the press that he had made up his mind about his future but what would happen was ultimately up to Arsenal.

“I am confident”

When asked if he had reached out to wantaway star Alexis Sanchez, Mertesacker was coy in his reply, insisting that Sanchez needs to be left alone.

“He needs a break now. He needs to relax,” the German defender told talkSPORT.

“He’s done a lot for us in the last season, he played almost every single game and played the Confederations Cup.

“You need to leave him alone to make up his mind what he wants to do. He’s got one more year here and then he makes his mind up… but it’s his decision.

“My feeling is that he feels good and comfortable here. He can play with freedom with us, he has his qualities. We’ve embraced him, everyone has embraced him at the club, so I am confident.
