Arsenal manager Unai Emery has this afternoon discussed his admiration for Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier, ahead of his side’s clash with the Saints.
Arsenal vs Southampton
The Gunners are set to welcome Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men to the Emirates tomorrow afternoon, for a Premier League meeting.
Both sides head into the matchup with important season objectives in mind.
Hosts Arsenal currently sit a point outside the English top-flight’s top-4, meaning a victory tomorrow would, at least temporarily, take the North Londoners back into a Champions League qualification spot.
Southampton, meanwhile, occupy the final of the Premier League’s relegation places as things stand, with the Saints sitting in 18th.
Cardiff’s drubbing at the hands of Watford yesterday, though, means that a 3-point haul for Southampton at the Emirates would lift them above the Welsh outfit and out of the drop-zone.
‘Amazing for the spectacle’
As such, ahead of his side’s crucial meeting with the Saints tomorrow, Arsenal boss Unai Emery was this afternoon questioned on the task at-hand for the Gunners, with the Spanish tactician having explained:
‘Like all the teams in the Premier League, they are difficult and they will be preparing for this match with big players and also with time. For us it is difficult.’
‘We have respect for them but we need to impose our game-plan and quality and intensity.’
‘It is very important to get the three points. We are playing at home with our supporters and I want to carry on stronger here, but with a big demand from ourselves to find a victory.’
‘A very very special player’
There was then a rather surprising moment, after Emery was asked about whether he was familiar with Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier.
And the Spanish tactician subsequently went on to reveal that not only is he familiar with the 50-year-old’s connection to the Saints, but that he was actually a huge fan of Le Tissier during the gifted midfielder’s playing days:
‘My memory of him is that he was a very, very special player.’
‘He’s one player who I would watch, when I was watching the Premier League in Spain.’
‘He was one player I would watch a lot of movies of. He was very technical, a quality player with the ball and was amazing for the spectacle.’
