Arsenal boss Arteta speaks out over Dani Ceballos amid January exit claims

Mikel Arteta has this afternoon moved to clarify the situation surrounding the future of Dani Ceballos, amid rumours that the on-loan Real Madrid man is seeking a departure from the club this month.

Ceballos joins Gunners

On the back of a somewhat hit-and-miss couple of seasons at the Bernabeu following his arrival from Real Betis, Spanish midfielder Ceballos was hotly-tipped for a departure from Madrid throughout last summer.

The likes of Tottenham and AC Milan were named as keen suitors of the all-action midfielder.

In the end, though, it was Spurs’ north London rivals Arsenal who clinched a deal for Ceballos.

The 23-year-old made the move to the Emirates on loan for the 2019/20 campaign:

Ceballos has since gone on to endure a somewhat hit-and-miss stint in the colours of the Gunners.

Though he has enjoyed starring performances versus the likes of Burnley and Bournemouth, the Spaniard has actually only managed starts in 7 of the club’s 24 Premier League fixtures to this point in the campaign.

This comes amid competition for places in Arsenal’s midfield, and a long-term injury which has kept Ceballos on the sidelines since November.

The 23-year-old’s struggles, meanwhile, have resulted in speculation of late that the Spanish international is seeking out a return to Real Madrid this month, ahead of a loan move elsewhere.

This comes with Ceballos desperate to carve out a place for himself in La Roja’s Euro 2020 squad.

‘Nothing to comment’

As such, speaking in a press conference ahead of his side’s FA Cup meeting with Bournemouth next Monday, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was this afternoon drawn on the possibility of Ceballos departing his squad over the coming week.

The midfielder’s fellow countryman, though, was keen to focus attentions back on Ceballos’ return to fitness, and potential contribution over the second-half of the campaign:

‘I heard all about those things [about wanting to leave]. But I have nothing to comment.’

‘He needs to get back to fitness, fight for his place like in any other team. After that I’ll make the selection that I think is fair with what I see on the pitch.’
