Arsenal aiming to tie Emiliano Martinez down to new deal – Times

Martinez impressing

Emiliano Martinez initially joined Arsenal all the way back in 2010.

However, despite having spent just over a decade at the club, Martinez had, until recently, never been able to secure regular first-team football.

When Bernd Leno picked up an injury vs Brighton just two games into Arsenal’s restarted campaign, though, the Argentine was afforded the chance to step up and prove himself.

And that is exactly what Martinez was able to do. With Leno out of action, many likely presumed that the Gunners’ season was doomed, when considering how key the German has proven in recent years.

However, Martinez has more than filled Leno’s boots, making countless top-quality saves, and playing a pivotal role in Arsenal clinching their 14th FA Cup title on Saturday.

Arsenal want Martinez to sign new deal

Now, on the back of his recent success, Martinez looks set to be rewarded with a new deal.

According to The Times:

Arsenal will try to capitalise on their FA Cup triumph by accelerating efforts to make signings and tie down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Emiliano Martínez to new deals.

Martinez currently has just under two years left on his deal at the Emirates.

However, convincing the South American to sign fresh terms may prove more difficult than expected, as The Times also claim that Martinez has reiterated that he does not want to return to being a back-up option when Leno returns to full fitness.

As a result, as we suggested on Sunday, Arsenal could now use Martinez’s upturn in form to cash in on the 27-year-old this summer, to raise funds for Mikel Arteta’s rebuild.
