Arda Turan retires from international football after journalist bust-up

Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan has confirmed his retirement from international football, following a bizarre incident with a journalist on a flight yesterday.

Bust-up

Rumours began to spread last night that the Turkey star had been involved in a serious altercation with a member of the press on board his team’s flight following a 0-0 friendly draw with Macedonia.

While early indications that Turan assaulted the 70-year-old Milliyet newspaper representative have yet to be confirmed, the former Atletico Madrid star admitted that a heated argument did take place.

Past problems

The on-flight bust-up came as a result of a previous report, published by Milliyet journalist Bilal Mese during Euro 2016, which claimed that Turan was at the centre of major squad tensions, relating to the level of bonuses to be paid to the Turkish players.

The 30-year-old took serious offence to these claims, using last night’s flight as an opportunity to get his point across to Mese.

According to reports, Turan shouted:

‘Tell me Bilal Meşe, were you there? Were you with us when you wrote about the bonuses issue? Who did I ask for money from? Who did ask I for bonuses from? Talk. Come on. Who made you write those reports?’

The Blaugrana man was restrained by his teammates, before adding:

‘What kind of a country is this? They allow you onto this plane. F*** those who allowed you onto this plane. You thought I was like the others. Who did I beg for money from? You son of a b****. I’d quit football before allowing anyone to say anything against my honor, my family.’

Social media

Turan later took to Instagram to provide his own account of proceedings, posting the following:

Translation

‘Do not worry. They are only three or five people. Of course, they have become accustomed to doing these things. Why? Because this is the system. They feed children and young people with chaos.’

‘You can’t talk about people’s character and family values. Someone will remember this. I thanked some journalists who criticise my football. This is their job. But you can’t attack my family and my values, I will not allow this for as long as I can.’

‘Was it true what I did yesterday? I don’t know! I am not a man who visits someone at home and after that sells him out, does something behind his back. I like to be a man who shouts and attacks to your face.’

‘Maybe it is not right but it is honest, honourable behaviour. Did I get any answer? No! He wrote about it for months but didn’t say any words to my face. They will talk tomorrow behind me.’

‘The child who you see in this photo paid for what he did in his life. He didn’t want anything from anyone other than God. Arda Turan didn’t start this road to be a star player or good player. He started this road to be an honourable man and protect his family.’

‘Whoever talks about my honour or my family gets my answer.’
