Chelsea & Liverpool’s very different Champions League matches
With the Champions League midweek over, all eyes are now on domestic football and the undoubted big game of the Premier League weekend is Liverpool versus Chelsea.
The build-up to this game has been going on for some time with Antonio Conte complaining about the schedule for his side for weeks now.
Whilst Liverpool played in Sevilla on Tuesday night, Chelsea were in Azerbaijan on Wednesday.
Despite the schedule being harder for Chelsea, the mood in the respective camps should be better with the Blues.
Chelsea confirmed qualification in the Champions League by beating Qarabag 4-0 whilst Liverpool were somewhat embarrassed to concede a 3-0 lead and draw 3-3 in Spain.
Antonio Conte on Sevilla 3 – Liverpool 3
Antonio Conte has discussed Liverpool’s failure to see out a comfortable win at the San Pizjuan – already nicknamed by some “Pizjuanbul”.
Conte told the official Chelsea website: “‘I watched the game. Liverpool played a really good first half with great intensity. But as you know very well, football is strange.”
The Chelsea boss continued: “What happened in the second half is very difficult to explain. Liverpool in the second half had opportunities to score other goals. They were also unlucky.”
Conte: “We know very well what are the qualities of Liverpool”
Conte added: “It’s important to prepare for the game and for us to try and play a really good game. We know very well what are the qualities of Liverpool.”
Finally, Conte concluded: “We have to work during the flight to prepare for the game, but to be honest we started [preparing] with my staff before tonight so as not to wait until at the last moment.”
It will be fascinating to see how Chelsea deal with Mohamed Salah who has been so impressive this season.
The Egyptian was sold by Chelsea to Roma, before leaving the Italian side this past summer for Liverpool.
