When Chelsea lost the race for Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United, people felt that Jose Mourinho had got one over on his former club.
That, according to Chelsea manager Antonio Conte, is not the case.
It seems that they always wanted Alvaro Morata, the player many people felt was on the way to Manchester United – but Conte has claimed Romelu Lukaku wasn’t on their radar.
He also made it very clear that the transfer market is crazy, and prices are mad, echoing claims made by many other managers, including Jurgen Klopp and Jose Mourinho.
The Express report Conte was speaking in Beijing during Chelsea’s pre-season and said: “For sure this transfer market is a crazy market, but it is not only for this season but for the future.
“Now there is crazy money, if you want to buy a normal player you need to spend 40-50 million Euro.
“It is the same. Lukaku cost a lot of money, the same with Lacazette. For a right back you spend 50-60 miliion Euro.
“It is very important the choice. Morata for sure is our first choice. He is a good player, the right prospect for Chelsea and hopes to show his value with us.”
Chelsea are a club that are often in the headlines, but this summer has been more dramatic than most, with Conte looking like leaving the club at times, and the future of Diego Costa yet to be sorted out.
The forward is still on the beach in Brazil, and it seems that he will leave the club, with Conte claiming that there will be no way back for him, no matter what this season.
That does put a huge amount of pressure on Morata, but Conte seems confident he can cope with it and deliver for the club.
