Antoine Griezmann: ‘Messi has not called me yet, but Suarez did’

New Barcelona recruit Antoine Griezmann has this evening discussed his start to life in Catalunya, as well as opening up on which of his fellow star Blaugrana attackers he has spoken to to this point.

Griezmann announces departure

The story surrounding the future of now-former Atletico Madrid star man Griezmann proved one of the talking points of the summer transfer window up until a fortnight ago.

On the back of rumours that Barcelona were ready to reignite their pursuit of the Frenchman this summer, after missing out on his signature this time last year, both Griezmann and Atletico confirmed that the former had signalled his intent to seek a new challenge back in May:

‘It’s been an incredible five years. Thank you very much for everything. I will take you in my heart.’

This led to immediate claims that Barca were ready to trigger the Frenchman’s release clause:

Griezmann joins Barca

And, despite hugely-conflicting subsequent rumours regarding the extent of the Blaugrana’s interest, it had nevertheless long-been predicted that Ernesto Valverde’s men would eventually clinch a deal for Griezmann.

As such, the attacker’s move to the Camp Nou being made official 10 days ago came as little surprise.

In an announcement across the club’s social media platforms, Barca confirmed Griezmann’s signing on a 5-year deal:

‘The group has welcomed me’

The World Cup winner has since joined the rest of Ernesto Valverde’s squad for pre-season training, with Griezmann having today opened up on some of his first experiences as a Blaugrana player.

The 28-year-old lauded his new teammates for welcoming him into their ranks, before confirming that he has not yet been contacted by Lionel Messi.

Luis Suarez, though, reached out to congratulate his new centre-forward competition on his Camp Nou switch:

‘The truth is it started badly because they nutmegged me twice in my first rondo. Luckily I have learned the lesson.’

‘Messi has not called me yet, but Suarez did. He congratulated me and welcomed me.’

‘The group has welcomed me and I am happy to share a dressing room with them. Hopefully I can help in the best way possible.’
