Hugo Lloris lifts the World Cup

Antoine Griezmann claims a Frenchman should win this year’s Ballon d’Or

Should a Frenchman win the Ballon d’Or?

Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has claimed that a member of France’s World Cup winning side should be the recipient of this year’s Ballon d’Or.

The nominees for the award have recently been revealed and it’s now time to start getting excited.

The usual names were up there but there was a big selection of French players.

Antoine Griezmann, N’Golo Kante, Hugo Lloris, Kylian Mbappe and Rafa Varane all made the nominees list.

That comes after the nation won the World Cup in Russia over the summer and several players have had successful club seasons too.

Now, Griezmann has claimed that one of the five should win the prestigious Ballon d’Or award after their summer triumph.

“We’re part of the best team in the world”

He has claimed that because France are the best team in the world, the best player in the world must be from that side.

‘We are world champions, we’re part of the best team in the world,’ Griezmann explained to France Football.

‘In this best team in the world there must be the best player in the world, right? In any case, that’s what I think.

‘Afterwards, there are votes, opinions, different judgements. But I think that a Frenchman must win the Ballon d’Or this year.’

Griezmann was also speaking about his chances of winning the award.

‘For me, it’s a dream. Historically, the Ballon d’Or is the best of the best,’ he continued.

‘There are only star players, only legends among the winners. It would be a dream to become an example to others.’
