Lonergan & Liverpool
Andy Lonergan isn’t exactly the most high-profile of goalkeepers, and probably not a name that many Liverpool fans will have been hoping to join their side in pre-season.
Lonergan is currently a free agent, after spending the 2018/19 season at Championship side, Middlesbrough.
Lonergan featured just four times for Boro’s senior side, and was loaned out to Rochdale between February and March of 2019.
The 35-year-old has previously played for the likes of Leeds United, Wolves and Fulham.
Now, though, the Evening Standard is reporting that Lonergan is set to join up with Liverpool on their pre-season tour of the United States.
The Reds are currently somewhat short-staffed in the goalkeeping department, as Allison is on holiday, and young shot-stopper Kamil Grabara is yet to return to Melwood.
Academy goalkeeping duo Viteslav Jaros and Caoimhin Kelleher are also out with injuries.
As a result, the ES is claiming that Lonergan is being brought in to help alleviate Liverpool’s goalkeeping crisis.
Jurgen Klopp’s side have already played two pre-season friendlies. Simon Mignolet was between the sticks for both ties.
Liverpool kicked off their pre-season with a 6-0 hammering of Tranmere Rovers, before beating Bradford City 3-1.
The Reds now face some much tougher tests, in the form of Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Sporting CP, Napoli and Lyon.
The Champions League holders then take on Manchester City on August 4th for the Community Shield.
Liverpool’s Premier League season will begin on August 9th, vs newly-promoted Norwich City.
