Andre Villas-Boas set for return to management with Marseille

Will Andre Villas-Boas succeed in Ligue 1?

Andre Villas-Boas is reportedly set for a return to management, with a move to Ligue 1 side Marseille close to completion.

The former Chelsea and Tottenham boss most recently managed Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG.

He decided to leave the club back in November 2017, taking an extended break from football.

During that time, he dove into his passion for motorsport, taking part in the Dakar Rally.

However, he had to retire from the sport after suffering an injury in January 2018.

Following his break, there was much talk about a return to football.

It was even suggested back in November 2018 when Slaviša Jokanović was sacked by Fulham that Villas-Boas was an option for the Cottagers.

The Portugese boss, though, turned down the job.

Now, Villas-Boas is close to making his return with a move to France.

Big task ahead for AVB

According to the Telegraph, Andre Villas-Boas ‘is close to making a return to football as the coach of Marseille.’

This comes after it was announced that Rudi Garcia would leave the club this summer.

Marseille are set to finish 6th in Ligue 1 after a disappointing campaign.

However, the club will be hoping that Villas-Boas can get them back on track.

According to the Telegraph’s report, ‘talks are understood to have taken place with the French club’s director of football Andoni Zubizarreta who is looking for a successor to Rudi Garcia.’

Marseille also have problems off the pitch.

According to recent reports, their finances aren’t looking too great after a disappointing season.

As a result, Marseille will likely have to offload some of their players in the transfer window.

One of those who could be shipped out is Kevin Strootman, with Marseille reportedly offering the midfielder to a trio of Premier League clubs.
