Anderlecht v Man United: Europa League preview

Manchester United travel to Belgium on Thursday night for the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final tie with Anderlecht.

The competition provides Jose Mourinho’s side with their best route to next season’s Champions League.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways at the weekend with a convincing 3-0 win at Sunderland. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford were all on the scoresheet.

Jose Mourinho’s side progressed to the last eight of the Europa League after a 2-1 aggregate win over FC Rostov in the previous round.

Belgian league leaders Anderlecht are currently on a five-match unbeaten run, despite their 0-0 draw with Gent on Sunday.

After finishing 3rd in their Champions League group, Rene Weiler’s side knocked out Zenit and APOEL to reach the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Man United’s biggest ever European victory came against Anderlecht, a 10-0 victory in 1956.

Wayne Rooney is back in training but it’s unclear whether or not he will play any part on Thursday night.

Antonio Valencia is available for selection again, having missed United’s last two matches.

Ashley Young is expected to miss out again, along with long-term absentees Juan Mata, Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
