Graeme Souness: Man United vs Chelsea
Scottish pundit Greame Souness has used his weekly column in the Sunday Times to compare two of the top strikers in the Premier League.
Chelsea travel to Man United today in a matchup of third vs fourth in the EPL.
Of course, both United and Chelsea spent big money last summer on forwards.
Romelu Lukaku switched to Old Trafford from Everton, while Alvaro Morata joined Chelsea from Juventus.
Which signing has been the better investment? For Souness it’s not really a close call.
Romelu Lukaku vs Alvaro Morata
For Souness, Lukaku was always a better buy than Morata. And the Belgian has out-performed the Spanish striker this season as well:
If you had offered me the choice of signing Romelu Lukaku or Alvaro Morata last summer, I’d have taken Lukaku.
Lukaku has 21 goals from 39 matches so far for United, if you include his goal in the Super Cup defeat by Real Madrid. That is a decent start, considering he has not had the kind of service Harry Kane gets week in, week out at Tottenham.
Morata has 12 goals from 34 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions. He started well enough… but I would say the vast majority of supporters have been disappointed with the player. They expected more.
It’s worth noting that Morata has struggled with injuries in recent months. That’s hampered his contribution to the Chelsea goals tally.
Premier League top scorers
Morata has scored 10 Premier League goals this season. That’s the ninth highest in the league this season, while Lukaku, on 12 EPL goals, sits seventh in the top scorers list.
Tottenham striker Harry Kane tops the charts with 23 goals, although Liverpool’s Mo Salah also has 23 goals after he scored in the 4-1 win over West Ham.
