Dele Alli

The Alli-Lingard England debate rumbles on following Chelsea 1-3 Tottenham

The debate amongst English fans regarding whether Jesse Lingard or Dele Alli should start at this summer’s World Cup has come to the fore online once again this evening, after the latter netted a brace versus Chelsea.

Matchup

The two sides went head to head in a Premier League meeting at Stamford Bridge, with potentially-crucial ramifications in the race for a spot in next season’s Champions League.

Ahead of kick-off, Spurs occupied the final Champions League place, with Chelsea having sat one place and five points adrift of their capital rivals.

Teams

In front

The early goings of this afternoon’s clash saw Chelsea work their way into proceedings, with the Blues taking more and more control as the half wore on.

And the positivity of Antonio Conte’s men paid off on the half-hour mark, when Victor Moses’ whipped cross from the right was headed home by Alvaro Morata, following a major misjudgement on the part of Hugo Lloris.

Worldie

However, a moment of magic from Christian Eriksen on the stroke of half-time meant that the sides headed in level at the break, after the Dane produced a goal of the season contender with a dipping, swerving effort from 30 yards.

Turnaround

And the turnaround was complete with just over an hour on the clock, as Dele Alli latched onto a lofted Eric Dier ball over the top of the Chelsea defence, with the English youngster taking the ball down with his first touch in sensational fashion, before lofting a perfect fashion over the outstretched arm of Willy Caballero.

Incredibly, Alli was at it again 5 minutes later, after a burst down the Chelsea left from Heung-min Son saw Caballero make an important save, before a scrappy exchange in the Blues’ box eventually led to Alli bundling home into the bottom-left corner of the hosts’ goal.

Reaction

Following Alli’s double, the debate between England’s fans regarding whether the Spurs’ man or Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard should be handed starting duties by Gareth Southgate at this summer’s World Cup in Russia has come to the fore online once again, with the best of the Twitter roundup below:
