Alexis Sanchez

Where should Alexis Sanchez play for Manchester United?

Man United’s brilliant comeback at Crystal Palace

In the end it was an evening to savour for Manchester United as they produced a comeback worthy of Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at the club.

But, it was far from easy at Selhurst Park with goals from Andros Townsend and Patrick van Aanholt giving the Eagles a two-goal advantage just after half-time.

Chris Smalling gave Manchester United hope. Romelu Lukaku equalised. And, Nemanja Matic won it at the death with a great strike.

Why is Alexis Sanchez playing so poorly?

But, there remains a big problem for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho: The role of Alexis Sanchez.

Much has been made of Arsenal’s form since Alexis Sanchez left The Emirates but the Chilean’s own displays have been far from accomplished at Old Trafford.

Sanchez has scored one goal at Manchester United in eight games and that was off the back of his own missed penalty against Huddersfield.

How does Jose Mourinho solve the Alexis Sanchez “problem”?

In the majority of his games for Manchester United, Sanchez has looked lost and off the same wavelength than his team mates.

His arrival has also caused other players to be dropped (Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford), some to lose form (Jesse Lingard) and others to improve (Romelu Lukaku).

After last night’s win at Crystal Palace, Jose Mourinho effectively admitted that Sanchez’s poor form is affecting the Manchester United team.

Alexis Sanchez starts on the left and then moves into the middle

When asked what he changed at half-time at Crystal Palace, Mourinho replied: “I can’t repeat half of the things I said to my team at half time. In the second half Sanchez was behind Lukaku, we gambled a little with 2v2 at the back.”

Sanchez started on the left at Selhurst Park, then played the second half behind Romelu Lukaku.

And, the Chilean superstar had an impact on the second goal when his shot was deflected off the bar for Lukaku to spin and score.

Perhaps playing Sanchez behind Lukaku is the way to go? But, will Mourinho be so gung-ho as to play with four forwards?

In a sign that Alexis Sanchez may not be so happy with his performances for Manchester United so far, the Chilean has not updated his social media since the FA Cup win at Huddersfield.

On Monday Night Football after the Manchester United comeback win over Crystal Palace, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher analysed this Alexis Sanchez “problem”.
