La Liga outfit Villarreal have this evening confirmed the signing of recently-released Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno.
Robertson ousts Moreno
Spanish stopper Moreno slipped majorly down the pecking order at Liverpool over the last couple of seasons, following the rise to prominence of fellow left-back Andy Robertson.
The latter’s incredible engine, wand of a left foot and, most importantly, defensive solidity have seen Robertson develop into of the Premier League’s finest full-backs.
As such, Moreno, widely-recognised for his lack of positional awareness and penchant for high-profile mistakes, has found himself largely left out in the cold.
This past season, the Spaniard managed just 5 appearances across all competitions. In addition, just 2 of these showings came in the Premier League, during busy periods when Jurgen Klopp was forced to rest first-choice Robertson.
Moreno on the move
As such, it came as little surprise when, on the back of Liverpool’s Champions League triumph in Madrid last month, Moreno was named as one of two high-profile Reds’ first-team players not to have their contracts renewed (along with Danny Sturridge):

The Spaniard, therefore, became a free agent upon the expiration of his contract at Anfield on July 1st.

As has since been confirmed this evening, though, the aforementioned clubs have missed out, with Moreno having officially returned to Spain, to join up with Villarreal.
The stopper has put pen-to-paper on a 5-year deal at the Madrigal:
