Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt & Liverpool: Guillem Balague reports on transfer talks

Ajax’s Matthijs de Ligt & Liverpool

One transfer rumour gathering pace on Sunday is the suggestion that Ajax’s captain and centre-half Matthijs de Ligt could join Liverpool.

De Ligt, 19, is one of the hottest properties in world football.

The teenager is already a mainstay for Ajax and the Dutch national team, while he’s been one of the stars of this season’s Champions League.

Ajax were eventually KO’ed by Tottenham in the competition’s semi-finals.

So could de Ligt join Liverpool?

Well, the likes of the Liverpool Echo are peddling that suggestion on Sunday, with a report headlined “Liverpool in ‘talks’ with Ajax defender Matthijs de Ligt”.

What Guillem Balague actually said

The Liverpool Echo got their story from quotes from Spanish football expert Guillem Balague.

Balague spoke about de Ligt and Liverpool during last Thursday’s BBC Football Daily podcast. Balague said:

They (Barcelona) think they have de Ligt, even though both Liverpool and PSG have also been talking to him.

The truth is Balague has also made other statements linking de Ligt and Liverpool.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Balague recently said:

De Ligt, of course, is possibly going to Barcelona.

There’s been meetings between Barcelona and (De Ligt’s agent) Mino Raiola in recent weeks and also Barcelona and Ajax.

They’re willing to pay about €70m (£61m), Ajax are happy with that.

It’s now down to the player where he wants to go to. Bayern Munich, PSG and Liverpool wanted him.

But I feel that he’s close – or that’s what Barcelona feels, that they’re close to getting him.

There is a cup final to be played so I don’t know when the announcement will be made but in the next couple of weeks we should know everything about that one.
