Ainsley Maitland-Niles could be ready to “kiss Arsenal goodbye”

Maitland-Niles speaks out

Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ future is up in the air at Arsenal, something that the Englishman made clear in a recent interview with The Daily Telegraph.

Maitland-Niles has spent the last six months on loan at West Bromwich Albion, impressing in central midfield even though he could not help prevent Sam Allardyce’s side from falling into the Championship.

Now due to return to Arsenal, Maitland-Niles has suggested that he would be more than happy to leave North London in search of more regular first-team football.

Speaking exclusively to the Telegraph, he said:

“If it works out it works out, if it doesn’t then kiss Arsenal goodbye. It’s been a long journey but a proud one at that. Maybe they still want to do something & things could change. If not, there’s always other teams”

The 23-year-old continued:

“They can tell me whether they’ve got plans to play me in the future or if they want to sell me. I’ve heard they want to make some space and some money so I’m not sure.”

The Gunners are yet to inform Maitland-Niles of his role in the squad, and he claims that the only communication he has received from the club is a fitness programme ahead of the new season.

A makeweight in a deal for Ruben Neves?

One option that Arsenal could pursue is using Maitland-Niles as a makeweight in a potential deal for Ruben Neves, who the club have been linked with as a replacement for the outgoing Granit Xhaka.

The Englishman was wanted by Wolves in the summer of 2020, and the Evening Standard reported that the midlands outfit may still be interested in Maitland-Niles.

This could make any deal for Neves far more affordable for the Gunners, who are without the added financial bonus of European football and may be seeking to cut costs on transfer fees.

While the door does not seem fully closed for Maitland-Niles at Arsenal, his interview suggests that he will not simply be happy to sit on the bench any longer at the Emirates Stadium.
