Aguero in/De Bruyne out – Mixed news for Man City ahead of Arsenal clash

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola this afternoon provided a fitness update on his squad, with the news a largely mixed bag for the Sky Blues.

Arsenal visit the Etihad

City are set to return to action following the international break tomorrow evening.

Guardiola’s men will welcome Arsenal to the Etihad, for a Premier League showdown.

The matchup comes as a highly anticipated one for a whole host of reasons, not least because it marks Mikel Arteta’s return to Manchester to take on his former mentor.

The Gunners are set to head into proceedings as the more in form of the two sides, having picked up wins in 6 of their 7 outings to start the season.

Man City, on the other hand, have begun the new campaign in much the same fashion that they saw out the last, looking uncharacteristically vulnerable.

The Citizens have failed to pick up wins in either of their last two league outings, the first of which saw them downed by 5 goals to 2 at home to Leicester City.

Pep’s latest

As such, with his side having also fallen to defeat the last time they faced Arsenal, in last season’s FA Cup semi-finals, Pep Guardiola will no doubt be desperate to get things back on track with a win over the Gunners this weekend.

And, ahead of the fast-approaching clash, the City boss this afternoon provided a fitness update on his squad.

The news, as outlined above, though, was largely mixed.

First, Guardiola confirmed that star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne is set to miss out:

‘Unfortunately Kevin De Bruyne is out, but the rest of the players came back well. I don’t think it is (serious), but the next games I think he will be out. We will see. I don’t know (how long for). I can’t answer because I don’t know.’

Gabriel Jesus, meanwhile, also remains on the treatment table:

‘No [Jesus is not ready]. There are injuries to some muscles where you can take a risk, but there are others where you cannot. He has an injury in the part of his leg where if he injured it more he could be out for a long long time.’

There was more positive news regarding the wellbeing of Sergio Aguero, however, with the prolific Argentine having returned to training, and expected to at least be fit enough to take his spot on the bench versus Arsenal:

‘Sergio Aguero is training well and we are happy. Every team needs strikers. He’s been training for three or four days. He has been training well. I am happy to see him on the pitch after so long.’

Mikel Arteta believes Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah is ‘evolving the right way’
