It is being reported by ESPN that Italian giants AC Milan are planning a move to bring Manchester United misfit Eric Bailly to the San Siro.
Falling further down Jose Mourinho’s defensive pecking order, the 24-year-old is believed to be growing increasingly frustrated by a lack of opportunities.
Bailly’s season to forget
Although the Ivory Coast international started both of United’s opening two Premier League games, Bailly has found chances incredibly hard to come by.
The duo of Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof appear to be Mourinho’s first choice pairing.
United’s £30million defender has not featured since being shipped off after 19 minutes in their 3-2 win over Newcastle last month.
The former Villarreal man was not even named in United’s matchday squad for their victories over Everton and Bournemouth.
Bailly’s current contract at Old Trafford runs until the summer of 2020 and the club have yet to initiate talks over an extension.
However, it is believed that Bailly will return to Mourinho’s squad for Wednesday’s Champions League match away at Juventus.
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has previously insisted he sees no way back for Bailly.
Speaking to BT Sport last month, the former England international gave a damning assessment.
“I don’t see a way back for Eric Bailly, dragged off.
“The manager said in the last game he didn’t have players that could play the ball out from the back and he’s been made the fall guy here.”
AC Milan’s need for a defender
If Bailly is looking to plan an escape from Old Trafford, the San Siro could be an ideal destination.
Now enjoying a three-match winning run, AC Milan have their sights set on a return to Champions League football.
However, Rossoneri boss Gennaro Gattuso has confirmed some devastating injury news.
Speaking last week, the former Italy international announced that summer arrival Mattia Caldara faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
“We’re going to lose Caldara for a couple of months. He had a problem with the medial ligament, it’s a cursed season for him, really disappointing for the lad.”
The talented 24-year-old was tipped to partner club captain Alessio Romagnoli at the heart of Milan’s defence.
If Manchester United are willing to cut their losses with Bailly in January, a move for Ivorian could be a smart piece of business for Gattuso.
