Aaron Ramsdale now Arsenal’s no.1 as Gunners look to cash in on Bernd Leno in January

Ramsdale the revelation

It is safe to say that Arsenal’s prolonged pursuit of Aaron Ramsdale raised more than a few eyebrows across the footballing world. The Sheffield United goalkeeper, relegated in back-to-back Premier League seasons, never set the world alight during his time in the Steel City, and the hefty 24 million pound price tag (plus a potential six million in add-ons) left the Gunners open to criticism.

It is far too early to tell just how effective the signing could be, but the newest addition between the posts is yet to concede a goal in Arsenal colours across three games, making some vital stops on the way.

And while Mikel Arteta has refused to reveal who his number one goalkeeper is moving forward, the answer was laid bare this evening.

In the Carabao Cup third round, it was Bernd Leno, not Ramsdale, who was selected in goal, alongside a string of other reserve players such as Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari. Ramsdale, by contrast, was given the night off, not even selected on the Gunners’ bench.

Arsenal look to cash in on Leno in January

Now, seemingly demoted within weeks of Ramsdale joining the club, and with 12 months left on his Arsenal contract come next summer, Leno is unlikely to want to stay.

As per 90min, the Gunners are happy for the German to stay until the summer, but it is also claimed that:

“Arsenal have informed Leno that they will not stand in his way and would be prepared to let him go as soon as the next transfer window in January.”

With a World Cup set to arrive in just over 12 months’ time, Leno could push hard for a January exit as he looks to cement his position in the Germany squad, a target which sitting on the Arsenal bench will not aid.
