‘A backward step’: Gary Lineker aims dig at Arsenal with transfer advice to James Maddison

Leicester City legend Gary Lineker has, on Sunday, provided a less than subtle piece of public advice to James Maddison, amid mounting links to Premier League rivals Arsenal.

Foxes star targeted

The headline news on the red half of North London 24 hours ago of course surrounded an update on the Gunners’ pursuit of Maddison.

Mikel Arteta and co. are known to be on the lookout for attack-minded midfield reinforcements ahead of next season, following Martin Odegaard’s return to Real Madrid.

A whole host of names, in turn, have been tipped as potential arrivals at the Emirates, with Maddison seemingly sitting top of Arsenal’s wishlist.

It therefore no doubt came as a boost to all associated with the club when, on Saturday evening, a series of encouraging updates surrounding the possibility of the Englishman making the move to the capital began to surface online.

The info came courtesy of reliable Gunners insider The AFC Bell, who first confirmed that Maddison has indeed been identified as the club’s ‘primary’ summer target.

This has seen the Foxes star, through back channels, offered a 4-year contract with the option of a 5th at the Emirates, to go along with a salary worth nearly double what he currently takes home, and the iconic no.10 jersey.

Maddison’s representatives, as a result, expect Arsenal to table an official proposal for his services over the coming weeks, with the midfielder himself ‘openly discussing’ the idea of swapping the East Midlands for North London ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

‘Never ends well…’

As outlined above, though, one individual evidently of the opinion that, if Maddison does eventually opt to take his talents to the capital this summer, he will be making a mistake, is Gary Lineker.

Taking to social media on Sunday afternoon, the Leicester City legend responded to reports of a seemingly imminent offer on Arsenal’s part, by aiming a less than subtle dig at the Gunners.

Lineker quoted the Tweet in question, accompanied by the simple caption: ‘From my experience, taking a backward step never ends well’, in reference to his former club’s recent domestic dominance over Mikel Arteta’s men:
