Rise to the top

Ousman Manneh left Gambia as a refugee two years ago and this weekend scored his first Bundesliga goal, firing in the winner as Werder Bremen beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-1.

Two years ago he was playing football in a refugee centre in Germany after leaving his entire family behind in the Yahya Jammeh-dictatorship of Gambia.

Manneh was signed by Werder Bremen in March 2015 after netting 15 goals in 11 appearances for the youth side of 5th tier club Blumenthaler.

“An unbelievable feeling”

The 19-year-old forward, making only his fourth start for Werder Bremen, could do little to hide his emotions after scoring the 59th minute winner against Leverkusen.

A deflected free kick fell to Manneh and the young Gambian star needed no invitation to strike the ball into the bottom corner from 13 yards.
