The top ten deals of the first £1 billion summer
The summer of 2016 will forever go down in football history. Arsenal’s £35 million signing of Shkodran Mustafi cofirmed this to be the first summer in history where over £1 billion were spent on transfers.
Twitter is where all fans go to see new signings and read fan reactions and here are the top 10 most Tweeted about deals from this transfer window.
10 – Alvaro Morata – Juventus to (Chelsea, Arsenal) Real Madrid
Alvaro Morata was a wanted man over the summer. The Spanish striker was in fine form at Euro 2016 after a great season with Juventus.
English heavyweights Arsenal and Chelsea battled out for his signature but in the end, the 23 year old was re-signed by his former club, Real Madrid, much to the disappointment of many Londoners.
9 – Granit Xhaka – Gladbach to Arsenal
Granit Xhaka was the first of five summer signings at Arsenal. The Swiss midfielder signed a deal at the Emirates very early in the transfer window after many weeks of speculation.
If his performance against Watford is anything to go by, we will be seeing plenty more Xhaka Tweets this season.
8 – N’Golo Kante – Leicester to Chelsea
N’Golo Kante was one of Leicester’s three key players last term. The French midfielder was outstanding in the Foxes fairytale campaign and his heroics didn’t go un-noticed.
Chelsea fans were clearly delighted with the signing of the 25 year old as his name was tweeted almost as many times as he won the ball back for Leicester last season.
7 – Riyad Mahrez – Leicester to Arsenal, Chelsea
The PFA player of the year was one of the world’s most wanted men this summer. Arsenal and Chelsea were yet again at war over his signature.
It seemed at times as if the Algerian was all but set to join the Gunners and also set tongues wagging by staying at the Chelsea Hotel, but in a shocking turn of events, the 25 year old signed a new contract at the King Power.
6 – Gonzalo Higuain – Napoli to (Arsenal) Juventus
Arsenal really were in the mix of the transfer window yet again this summer. After failing to sign the Argentinian forward in 2013, Arsene Wenger tried yet again to bring Higuain to the Emirates.
Higuain was linked with the North Londoners for a large period of the summer before moving to Serie A Champions, Juventus, much to the dismay of Napoli fans.
Higuain was signed for a staggering £75.3 million, a sum that Arsene Wenger would surely never pay.
5 – Shkodran Mustafi – Valencia to Arsenal
Just over 24 hours before the transfer deadline closes, Wenger pulled off a sensational transfer to bring German World Cup Winner, Shkodran Mustafi to the Emirates.
Arsenal unveiled the German centre back to the fans via Twitter, replying to poor Arsenal supporter Daniel Floyd who tweeted “Tell you what if we sign Mustafi I’ll give everyone that RT’s this £20.” with Mustafi himself saying ” I hope you don’t regret your tweet!”
4 – Henrikh Mkhitaryan – Borussia Dortmund to Man United
Henrikh Mkhitaryan was unstoppable last year. The Armenian finished the season with 23 goals and 32 assists for Borussia Dortmund.
Jose Mourinho was clearly a big fan of the winger and bought him to Old Trafford as one of his earliest signings. United fans were very pleased with their new star and took to Social Media to show their delight.
3 – Jamie Vardy – Leicester to Arsenal
Another deal that fell through. Another deal that Arsenal fans will want to forget.
Jamie Vardy to Arsenal looked a rock solid deal as EURO 2016 began but a few weeks later, the deal was off, leaving Arsenal fans frustrated with the lack of signings over the summer.
Vardy’s wife didn’t help with the transfer saga as she regularly Tweeted about the situation. Arsenal fans were desperate for Vardy’s signature and showed their feelings on Twitter from start to finish.
2 – Zlatan Ibrahimovic – PSG to Man United
What. A. Signing. One of Manchester United’s greatest ever signings was a free transfer.
Zlatan joined his former boss Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford so that he could finally get a taste of Premier League football.
Zlatan is always at the centre of media attention but this summer, his name was everywhere. The Swedish talisman will always be a fans favourite wherever he goes and everyone was excited to see him in England.
Everyone, except perhaps Pep Guardiola.
1 – Paul Pogba – Juventus to Man United
Of course. It had to be Paul Pogba. Pogba re-signed for Manchester United four years after leaving for Juventus as a teenager.
In just 4 years, Pogba has become one of the greatest players on the planet and Mourinho had to break the transfer record in order to bring him back to Old Trafford.
United fans went crazy on Twitter, as did everyone else on the planet, in awe of his £89 million move. #POGBACK
