Match preview

Will Sporting Kansas City stay on track for yet more U.S. Open Cup glory?

To date, SKC have won this competition on four occasions, including in 2012, 2015 and 2017, which is the joint-most triumphs of any team.

So far in this season's edition, the Wizards have dramatically ousted FC Dallas in extra time and then come from behind to beat Houston Dynamo.

In the former, they came from 2-0 down to win 4-2 before beating Houston 2-1 courtesy of Johnny Russell's brace.

In MLS, Peter Vermes' side enjoyed a massive victory on Sunday, lifting them off the bottom of the Western Conference.

Felipe Hernández and club-legend Graham Zusi on target as they became the first away side to beat Nashville SC at Geodis Park.

Before this, SKC had only won once in MLS since 26 March, but are up to 12th, four points below the play-off line.

Despite this underwhelming league form, Sporting Kansas City should have too much quality in this tie.

Although, don't write off Union Omaha, as they've already caused an upset or two in their debut U.S. Open Cup campaign.

The Owls have won four time so far, defeating Des Moines Menace and Northern Colorado Hailstorm as well as MLS clubs Chicago Fire and Minnesota Union.

Both major shocks came on the road too, ousting the Fire on penalties, before Hugo Kametani and Joe Brito scored in St. Paul in the last round.

Union Omaha only began play in 2020 and operate in USL League One, the third-tier, but have already enjoyed success.

Last year, they won both the regular season and play-off titles, an amazing achievement, but are currently third-bottom this time round.

In the biggest game of their very short history, can Union Omaha cause a major upset at Children's Mercy Park?

The winners of this tie will face either LA Galaxy or Sacramento Republic in next month's semi-finals.
