Portland Timbers vs Philadelphia Union betting tips: Major League Soccer preview, predictions and odds

Portland Timbers had won five consecutive meetings with Philadelphia before the Union's 3-0 victory in Chester 12 months ago. This though does mean Philly have never won any of their five trips to Providence Park, losing four.

Both teams to score is 4/6.

Jarosław Niezgoda has scored three times for Portland so far, all of which have come on the road. He is 11/2 to break the deadlock and 11/5 to score his first in Oregon.

Match preview

This was one game away from being MLS Cup last year, with NYCFC ousting Philly in the Conference Finals before beating Portland in the showpiece occasion.

Will either be lifting silverware come the business end of 2022?

Well, without doubt, the Philadelphia Union are the better placed of the two to achieve this, currently sat top of the Eastern Conference.

Jim Curtin's side won five in a row in March and early-April, a new club record, but are actually winless in six since then, including an ongoing streak of five draws.

Last weekend, despite leading through Dániel Gazdag, they could only draw 1-1 with the ten-men of New York Red Bulls.

Then, even more disappointingly, on Wednesday, the Union played out a goalless game at home to strugglers Inter Miami.

So, despite having not won since 9 April, Philly remain first in the east, but with four teams just one point behind.

Over in the west, Portland Timbers are languishing down in tenth, thereby below the play-off line.

Giovanni Savarese would've been hoping that his team could kick-start their campaign after demolishing Sporting Kansas City 7-2 last weekend.

The Timbers becoming just the fifth MLS side to score 6+ in one half, securing the club's biggest-ever league victory.

However, on Wednesday, they were beaten 3-2 by San Jose Quakes, despite goals from Cristhian Paredes and Bill Tuiloma in California.

Thus, having only won three matches so far, they're in danger of missing the play-offs for the first time since 2016.

Will there be a winner at Providence Park?
