Champions New York City FC kick off the defence of their MLS Cup crown.

Back on 11 December 2021, NYCFC beat Portland Timbers on penalties, thereby being crowned MLS champions for the first time.

Since then, manager Ronny Deila has departed for Standard Liège, while talisman Valentín Castellanos has been moved to fellow City Football Group club Girona.

Despite all the upheaval, Nick Cushing’s team have picked up the Campeones Cup and finished third in the Eastern Conference already this year.

The Boys in Blue concluded the regular season with three successive victories, defeating Atlanta United 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.

In less good news, with Yankee Stadium unavailable, NYCFC will play this home tie at Citi Field, foregoing some of their home advantage.

Nevertheless, it would be a major surprise if the champions were beaten in this first round match-up.

That’s because Inter Miami are making their first-ever post-season appearance, a magnificent achievement in of itself.

In the past, the Herons have finished tenth and 11th in the east, but ended this campaign up in sixth place.

Phil Neville’s team won four on the bounce, including a 4-1 hammering of Orlando, before a dead-rubber 3-1 defeat to Montréal on Decision Day.

In less good news, Inter Miami have lost their last four visits to New York, which doesn’t bode well does it?

Will New York City FC be far too strong in Queens, setting up a Conference semi-final date with CF Montréal or Orlando?
