After a fantastic 2021 season, there are signs that Colorado Rapids might not be able to replicate that in 2022.

Last weekend, Robin Fraser's side kicked off their MLS campaign by being hammered 3-0 by LAFC at Banc of California Stadium.

In truth, it could've been more.

Before this, the Rapids crashed out of CONCACAF Champions League in the first round, losing on penalties to Comunicaciones from Guatemala.

Certainly not the start they were hoping for.

Last year, Colorado finished top of the Western Conference for the very first time, coming second overall, last achieving the latter in 2016.

However, having sold Kellyn Acosta and Cole Bassett, they might not be competing at the top of the table this time.

In contrast, Atlanta United are hoping to return to top form this year after a barren couple of seasons.

The Five Stripes beat Sporting Kansas City 3-1 in front of a huge 68,000 crowd at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to kick off this season.

Luiz Araújo, new signing Dom Dwyer and 17 year old home-grown talent Caleb Wiley with the goals.

Atlanta won MLS Cup in just their second-ever season in 2019, before adding the U.S. Open Cup and Campeones Cup a year later.

However, they actually missed the play-offs in 2020 before scrapping in last season, losing in the first round to NYCFC.

Under Gonzalo Pineda, the Five Stripes are looking to be a force once again.
