Charlotte FC vs D.C. United

August 04, 2022

Match preview

Wayne Rooney’s return to Major League Soccer was never going to be an uneventful affair was it?

On Sunday, the 36 year old took charge of D.C. United for the first time with Orlando City the visitors to Audi Field.

It looked like being another defeat for the capital club when Orlando broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, maintaing that lead going into stoppage time.

Chris Durkin then equalised in the first minute of injury time before, with the last kick of the night, Taxiarchis Fountas snatched all three points.

This is the the tenth time in MLS history a a team has won despite going into stoppage time losing, with D.C. responsible for three of these.

The Black-and-Red remain rooted to the foot of the east, having only won one of their previous 11, but a lot of the doom and gloom has been lifted.

Will Rooney maintain his perfect start as he takes his team to North Carolina?

Charlotte FC meantime only got to play 16 minutes of their weekend match against Columbus Crew.

On Saturday, that game was suspended and later abandoned due to lightning in the area.

So, Christian Lattanzio’s team come into this one following back-to-back defeats, beaten 3-2 in Miami and 4-0 in Toronto.

But, at home, Queen City remain very strong, winning seven of their ten home games, impressive numbers in an expansion season.

Will Bank of America Stadium continue to be a fortress?
