For the sixth time, rivals Mexico and United States go head-to-head in a CONCACAF Gold Cup Final.
The US’ only victory in this regard came in 2007 with Mexico winning the other four finals between the two, doing so in 1993, 1998, 2009, 2011, and 2019.
In the latter, two years ago, Jonathan dos Santos’ superb second half strike was the difference in a 1-0 victory at Soldier Field.
Who will win as these great rivals reconvene in Las Vegas?
Mexico started the tournament as heavy favourites because, unlike USA, Tata Martino named, almost, his strongest squad.
This helped them top Group A, drawing 0-0 with Trinidad & Tobago and then beating Guatemala and then El Salvador.
In the quarter-finals, el Tri blew Honduras away, scoring three times in 12 minutes; Rogelio Funes Mori, dos Santos and Orbelín Pineda the ones on target.
This set up a meeting with surprise semi-finalists Canada on Thursday.
The holders took the lead in first half stoppage time, Pineda rolling in a penalty, but then Canada equalised just ten minutes after the interval.
Carlos Salcedo then had the chance to restore Mexico’s lead with another penalty but his tame effort was saved by Maxime Crépeau
But, in the 99th minute, el Tri’s pressure told; Rodolfo Pizarro’s pulled it back to Héctor Herrera who smashed home a winner.
Now, will Mexico win their 12th Gold Cup title?
As for USA, Gregg Berhalter named a mainly domestic-based roster after his ‘A’ squad won the Nations League in June, beating Mexico in the final.
So, expectations were low but the U.S. won all three group games, beating Haiti and Canada 1-0 and, in between, Martinique 6-1.
In the quarter-finals, Matthew Hoppe’s late header saw them beat Jamaica in Dallas before yet another 1-0 win over Qatar in a thrilling semi-final.
The Invitees missed a penalty, chipping it over the bar and then, with just three to play, Nicholas Gioacchini’s cut-back was scrambled in by Gyasi Zardes.
So, it’s the United States who march on, setting up this date with their great rivals Mexico.
Who will win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup Final at Allegiant Stadium?
Prediction: United States 1-2 Mexico
