United States vs Costa Rica live streaming: Preview
United States are first ever CONCACAF Nations League Champions!
On Sunday night in Denver, the Stars and Stripes took on fierce rivals Mexico in the Nations League Final having narrowly beaten Honduras in the semis last Thursday.
It didn’t start well at all for USA; El Tri were 1-0 in front after just 67 seconds when Mark McKenzie poor pass was intercepted and hammered in by Tecatito Corona.
Then, a dramatic two minutes followed.
Héctor Moreno thought he’d doubled Mexico’s lead but his header was ruled out for a very tight offside by VAR.
Just moments later, the U.S. went up the other end, won a corner which was headed onto the post by Weston McKennie with Gio Reyna there to put in the rebound.
From seemingly 0-2 to 1-1 in a mere matter of seconds.
However, it looked as though Mexico had won it again when Diego Lainez’s low shot beat substitute goalkeeper Ethan Horvath in the 79th minute.
But, the U.S. responded again with McKennie’s towering header equalising once more.
The game went into extra time and, with just six to play, the United States were awarded a penalty for a foul on Christian Pulisic.
Captain America himself stepped up and smashed the ball into the top corner.
But the drama wasn’t over; in the final seconds Mexico were awarded a penalty with McKenzie penalised for handball.
El Tri’s captain Andrés Guardado, making his 167th international appearance, stepped up by was denied by Horvath.
The U.S. held on in a truly crazy game and left Empower Field at Mile High with their first trophy under Gregg Berhalter.
What’s next for USMNT?
Now though, it’s all about looking to the future.
There’s still a CONCACAF Gold Cup to look forward to, commencing on 10 July, but Berhalter is likely to take a mainly domestic-based roster to that competition.
So, this friendly is the last chance for the A squad to play before going on summer vacation.
Costa Rica’s week hasn’t quite been as successful.
They finished fourth in the Nations League after losing to Mexico in the semis and then Honduras in the third-place play-off, both on penalties.
Los Ticos last won the Gold Cup in 1989 but, if the U.S. and Mexico both name weekend squads, will believe they can win this year’s edition.
Who will claim victory in this friendly at Rio Tinto Stadium in Utah?
Prediction: United States 3-1 Costa Rica
USA have won four of their last six meetings with Costa Rica including their last meeting, a 1-0 friendly victory in February 2020 in California.
But, Costa Rica did win both meetings in World Cup 2018 qualifying, 4-0 in San José and 2-0 in New Jersey.
