After penalty shootout joy for both, great rivals Canada the the United States meet in Kashima.

USA are looking to become the first side to win Olympic Gold as World Champions.

The Stars and Stripes have dominated women’s international football, winning four World Cups and four Olympic Golds.

However, they were unconvincing in the group stages, first losing 3-0 to Sweden on matchday one; their first tournament defeat for a decade.

The U.S. bounced back, hammering New Zealand 6-1, before drawing 0-0 with Australia to secure second spot in Group G.

As a result of this, they were forced to play European Champions Netherlands in the quarter-finals; a repeat of the last World Cup Final.

Oranje took the lead but USA then scored twice in three first half minutes; Sam Mewis equalising with a header before Lynn Williams put them in front.

However, Vivianne Miedema’s second of the night, and tenth of the competition, made it 2-2, forcing extra time and then penalties.

Miedema was first up but her effort was saved by Alyssa Naeher.

Rose Lavelle, Alex Morgan and Christen Press all converted with Naeher then making another save.

This meant Megan Rapinoe could send USA through and she fired her penalty into the top corner.

So, Vlatko Andonovski’s side are through, but only just.

Canada meanwhile got through in second place in Group E, beating Chile and drawing with Japan and Great Britain.

So, they met South American champions Brazil in the quarters and it wasn’t a classic, finishing goalless at Miyagi Stadium after two hours.

The Reds appeared to be in trouble when their talismanic captain Christine Sinclair missed their first penalty.

But, Jessie Fleming, Ashley Lawrence, Adriana Leon and Vanessa Gilles all converted and Stephanie Labbé made not one but two saves to send them through.

Canada have won back-to-back Olympic Bronzes in 2012 and 2016 but are now aiming to get to their very first intercontinental final.

The winners qualify for the Gold Medal match while the losers stay in Kashima for the Bronze Medal match.

Sweden play Australia in the other semi but which one of these North American rivals will be celebrating at Kashima Stadium?

Prediction: United States 2-1 Canada

The U.S. are unbeaten in all 13 competitive meetings with Canada at World Cups, Olympics and in CONCACAF competitions.

They met in the semi-finals of the London 2012 Olympics with the U.S. winning 4-3 at Old Trafford.
