Will Korea Republic take another step towards the next round of Asian World Cup Qualifying?

South Korea are top of Group H but unlike some of the other Asian powerhouses, do not boast a 100% record.

Back in 2019, they amassed seven points from three fixtures, putting past Turkmenistan, eight past Sri Lanka when they visited Hwaseŏng but were then held to a goalless draw in Lebanon.

Nevertheless, the Taegeuk Warriors returned to action in style on Saturday by hammering Turkmenistan.

Hwang Ui-jo with a brace while Nam Tae-hee, Kim Young-gwon and Kwon Chang-hoon all also scored.

Thus, Paulo Bento’s team are now back on top of the group, above Lebanon on goal difference, but they need to stay at the summit to guarantee a place in the third and final round of qualifying.

Given that South Korea have made it to the last nine World Cups in-a-row, they’ll be the favourites to qualify once more when the third round kicks off in September.

That is assuming that they get there which they surely will.

Sri Lanka meanwhile are unlikely to put up much residence is this David and Goliath encounter.

Just to get here, they had to beat Macau in a two-legged play-off in 2019 which they only won because their opponents did not send their team for the second leg due to safety concerns.

Before this, they’d only ever won 3 of 31 World Cup Qualifiers and have never made it to an Asia Cup either.

In this group, Amir Alagić’s side have lost all five matches, scoring twice and conceding 18, most recently losing 3-2 to Lebanon on Saturday.

This means the side known as the Golden Army are ranked 204 by FIFA, only Aruba, Turks and Caicos Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, British Virgin Islands, Anguilla and San Marino are below them.

This should be an easy victory for South Korea at Goyang Stadium.

Prediction: Sri Lanka 0-7 Korea Republic
