Which of these former champions of Europe will be in pole position to reach the final?

In UEFA Champions League terms, nobody does it better than Real Madrid who’ve won this competition 13 times, including four times in the last seven seasons.

In the previous round, los Blancos beat Liverpool, winning 3-1 at home before holding out for a goalless draw at Anfield; Vinícius Júnior with a brace in the former.

However, their form since then has been far from impressive.

Zinedine Zidane’s side have drawn two of their last three La Liga games 0-0, with Real Betis on Saturday and at Getafe a week earlier.

A key reason behind this is the fact that their squad is stretched to the limit with Sergio Ramos, Ferland Mendy, Fede Valverde and Lucas Vázquez injured.

Dani Carvajal, Raphaël Varane and Eden Hazard are all back though and just in the nick of time.

Nevertheless, given their amazing record in this competition under Zidane, los Merengues will believe they’ll be taking to the field in İstanbul on 29 May.

As will Chelsea who will travel to Valdebebas full of belief.

The Blues dispatched the other Madrid club, Atlético, in the round of 16 before edging out Porto in the quarter-finals.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are also enjoying themselves domestically too.

They’re through to the FA Cup Final, beating Manchester City in the semis, and climbed into the Premier League’s top four on Saturday night.

Timo Werner got the only goal at the London Stadium against West Ham United in their last outing at the weekend.

Chelsea’s one previous Champions League triumph was in 2012 and, back then, they were massive underdogs to lift the trophy.

This’ll give them the hope that anything is possible.

Who will claim a first leg lead at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano?

Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Chelsea

This is Chelsea’s seventh Champions League semi-final, only winning two against Liverpool in 2008 and Barcelona in 2012.

Real Madrid have lost just one of 15 knockout ties under Zinedine Zidane, winning three finals.
