The post-Steven Gerrard era at Rangers begins with this huge semi-final clash at Hampden.

Ten days ago, it was confirmed that Gerrard would leave Rangers to take up the vacant Head Coaches position at Aston Villa.

He was in charge for 193 games in Glasgow, leading them to the Europa League round of 16 twice and winning the Premiership title last season.

Now though, the Light Blues want to stay on track to win a first domestic cup since 2011, something Gerrard could not deliver.

Since then, Giovanni van Bronckhorst has been appointed as the new manager but will not be in the dugout for this game.

So far this League Cup campaign so has been a breeze, featuring routine home victories over Dunfermline Athletic and then Livingston.

The Gers are also currently top of the table, four points above Celtic, having beaten Ross County 4-2 in their last outing.

That points to them being favourites to lift the League Cup on 19 December but Gerrard’s sudden departure leaves a lot of unknowns.

Will Rangers avoid a semi-final slip-up at Hampden?

Hibernian meanwhile will be looking to overcome last season’s Hampden hoodoo.

They visited the National Stadium four times last season but only won once, failing to win any of the three major honour up for grabs.

These defeats came against Hearts in the delayed Scottish Cup semi and then to St Johnstone twice, first in a League Cup semi and then the Scottish Cup Final.

With Celtic and Rangers out the picture, Jack Ross’ side missed multiple golden chances to win major silverware.

This season, Hibs haven’t been in action for 25 days with their games against Ross County and Livingston postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak.

Before this hiatus, Hibs had lost four league games in a row for the first time in seven and a half years, going down to Rangers, Dundee United, Aberdeen and Celtic.

This leaves them sixth in the Premiership but, should they win their two games in hand, they’d move back up to fourth.

The last time these two clubs met in a cup tie was the 2016 Scottish Cup Final, in which Hibs ended their 114 year wait to win that competition.

Will those in green be celebrating again or will managerless Rangers prove to be too strong?
