Will Portugal safely make it through to another FIFA World Cup Finals?

A Seleção have qualified for all 11 major tournaments in the 21st century and are the current holders of the European Championships and the UEFA Nations League.

They’ll seek to retain the former this summer.

Before then, their road to Qatar begins and, right now, Portugal have to be amongst the favourites to lift the World Cup in Doha on 18 December 2022.

Of course, they have to qualify first.

Fernando Santos’ side are in excellent form having won 13 of their last 20 competitive matches, only losing to France and Ukraine in this time.

Thus, they are overwhelming favourites to win Group A but, with only the group winners guaranteed a place at the World Cup, there’s no margin for error.

Azerbaijan meanwhile are likely to be the group’s whipping boys.

Their home Bakı Olimpiya Stadionu is currently scheduled to host four UEFA Euro 2020 matches but the hosts never looked like being there themselves.

In the last qualification campaign, Azerbaijan amassed just one point, drawing 1-1 with Croatia at home, but lost their other seven matches.

This means they’ve only ever won 16 of 131 competitive matches and are yet to reach a major finals.

This match will be played at the neutral venue of Allianz Stadium, home of Juventus.

Even without home advantage, Portugal should ease to victory in Turin.

Prediction: Portugal 5-0 Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan have only won one of their last 22 competitive internationals, only beating Cyprus and the Faroe Islands since September 2017.

Portugal meanwhile have only lost four of their last 53 matches, dating back to 2014.

Cristiano Ronaldo has scored 102 international goals against 41 different nations, two of which came against Azerbaijan back in 2006.
