Can Northern Ireland finish World Cup qualifying on a positive note?

Since missing out on the last World Cup, controversially losing to Switzerland in the play-offs, the Green and White Army have struggled for wins.

In fact, since that heartbreaking night in Basel in November 2017, they’ve won just five of 25 competitive matches.

This includes losing to Slovakia in the Euro 2020 play-off final at home.

The only teams they’ve beaten in this four-year period are Belarus, Estonia and Lithuania.

The latter, a 4-1 victory in Vilnius in September, was Ian Baraclough’s first competitive win as manager coming at the tenth attempt.

They then drew with Switzerland at home but were unable to build on that in October’s double-header.

Their World Cup hopes were mathematically ended by a 2-0 defeat to the Swiss at Stade de Genève, another one surrounded with controversy.

Then, three days later, despite taking the lead through Conor Washington, they were beaten 2-1 by Bulgaria in Sofia.

This has seen them slump down to fourth with two games remaining, first this one before European Champions Italy visit on Monday.

Ahead of the Nations League next year and Euro 2024 qualifying starting a year later, will Northern Ireland rediscover that winning feeling?

Lithuania could be the perfect visitors, although they did enjoy a victory of their own last month.

Justas Lasickas opened the scoring before Fedor Černych bagged a quick-fire late brace in a 3-1 victory over Bulgaria at Vėtra Stadium.

Nevertheless, three days later, they were swatted aside by Switzerland, losing 4-0, so their tally stands at just three points.

In all, Lithuania have won just three of their last 34 competitive matches so head to Belfast as big underdogs.

Will Northern Ireland enjoy a victory at Windsor Park for the first time since June 2019?
